Barriers to Early Grade Reading

Teachers in the classroom are working hard to improve students’ reading proficiency. However, our children’s reading progress is also influenced by factors outside the classroom.

Because we know a child's learning does not begin or end at the schoolhouse door, we're dedicated to ensuring every child has the full support they need at home and across Montgomery to live, learn, and earn. This means removing fundamental barriers that can prevent students from being present, healthy, and ready to learn each day.

To achieve this outcome, our community must enhance collaboration between Montgomery Public Schools and community-based family service providers, and expand access to vital resources and programs that complement and reinforce what children are learning in the classroom.

We will work through COLLECTIVE IMPACT to break down barriers to early grade reading. In each section below, you'll find details on the metrics we’re tracking that will show whether we are growing closer to achieving our goals.

2.1: Family Supports

OUR GOAL: All families have access to community- and neighborhood-based organizations and resources that create a healthy, safe, and economically stable environment, support their children’s well-being and development, and help ensure they are present, active, and ready to learn each day.
